House of Mud 04:19
I love my house made of mud I love my house made of mud It’s not fit for children and it’s not fit for a wife I love my house made of mud Don’t want no one weeping when I’m gone Don’t want no one weeping when I’m gone Cause I’ve had me some high times, man I had my fun Don’t want no one weeping when I’m gone Won’t someone please take my poor dog Won’t someone please take my poor dog He stays awful quiet and he does not eat too much Won’t someone please take my poor dog Think I’ll go die in my house of mud Think I’ll go die in my house of mud Cause lately I’ve been dreaming, and I do believe it’s time Think I’ll go die in my house of mud

You stumble right into the beat Leave us there shuffling our feet Staring down at the floor You got no claim at all None that you’d recall Drown in alcohol Move it over, to some other part of the mind I’ll try Living on the outside in It’s a helluva way begin Leaning hard on new friends But you got no claim at all Not that you’d recall Drown in alcohol It’s all over, you can’t hold her anymore Where’s the door? So stumble right into the street Scrape those bended knees Tell me I’m a tease But you got no claim at all None that you’d recall Drown in alcohol

Hayseed Girl 02:14
Hayseed girl, a country queen of the likes you’ve never seen Hayseed girl, kissin’ cousins, you gotta love ‘em She’ll tear your heart to pieces, and leave you crying on the ground She’ll take you down, to the river, and lay you down on sheets of linen You won’t shower, she won’t care, she lets the ribbons fall down from her hair Then tears your heart to pieces, and leaves you crying on the ground

Tell me quickly, tell me now I’ve seen your face but I don’t know how Maybe somewhere from the road You were not young and you were not old Take my hand child, don’t be afraid Cause I done seen those mines you’ve laid And I’ll just walk right over them Jump around, come back again Cause all I really need is those little bees To pollinate my little trees That come up to my daughter’s knees She falls down laughin with the glee That only children understand When mud’s been oozin through their hands And bugs become their only friends Watch them all come back again It’s no mystery I go insane When that girl walks through the flame Like she’s done a million times She comes right back for another try Take it off, strip it down Like buffalos lying on the ground They never run and they never hide They make you feel like crap inside So tell me quickly, tell me now I’ve seen your face, I don’t know how Maybe somewhere from the road You were not young and you were not old Take it off and lie it down Leave them clothes there on the ground Take my bones and take ‘em home I don’t think I’ll go alone

Highway Home 03:35
Jesus can you hear me, I’ve been calling for some time Sittin’ with this Bible, stealing some rhymes Are my eyes so cloudy that I cannot see That you only come in whispers of sacred harmony And then you turn away from me, as if I should of known That prayin’ by the bedside’s not the same once you’re grown And momma always told me stay away from them river girls Who’d take you in the woods at night and teach you of the world She was barely seventeen when I came falling out And the holy Martin left us that day filling her with doubt I can’t find a highway home And I never want to be that alone I’m not that alone…. We might have been better left as fish muck in the drink But your holy course in miracles tapped our missing link So now we walk around all day these thoughts they’re in our heads And I can’t even tell my niece what happens when we’re dead But I’d sure like to see my grandpa once or twice again And if you could arrange that I think we could be friends I can’t find a highway home And I never want to be that alone I’m not that alone…. I know that I burn too hot, I can feel it killing me But when it all comes pouring out it’s as if I could be free Are you really listening and could you turn it off? Cause I feel too connected like a sow at the trough Jesus can you hear me, I’ve been calling for some time Sitting with this Bible, her little hand in mine She is just so tiny it makes my poor heart break And you know I’m a doubter with sins I can’t forsake But I got no one left to ask, and there’s no one here but me So if you’d take her away tonight I’d get down on my knees Try to find her highway home Cause she never ought be that alone Not that alone… Not that alone.

She’s Daddy’s little princess, she ain’t got no fear at all Ain’t no trouble she can’t handle with a credit card call But she don’t even know it, ‘cause she ain’t from the dirt Most folks only notice that little yellow skirt Well I’ll see her when she’s dancing, she’ll come gliding across the room Sidles up beside me, smelling of perfume She says she lost her ride and could I take her somewhere Invites me inside, but I can’t go there It ain’t no good at home, so go on out and get it You’re out most every night now, come on just admit it She’s sittin’ there like fruit that’s been ripened on the vine And she’s watchin’ you get weaker almost every single time Thinking you might have something she could really need Something more than sensual that she ain’t ever seen So when she comes a callin’, you best get right down those stairs Come on off of that high horse, don’t tell me you can’t go there What about those promises I made when I was young I don’t aspire to do the things that my Daddy might have done And is that the attraction, do I remind you of your pa? And you just gotta see those things your momma might of saw I’ll see you when you shimmy, when you come sliding across the room And throw your arms around me a little bit too soon Thinking that tonight I might take you off somewhere Invite me deep inside but I can’t go there Hell’s not just for sinners, no it’s right here for those saints Who can walk around avoiding all those lives that they could taint And don’t think I’m not humbled that you’d want a man like me But I’m still working on the sins of a youth that follows me I’ll see you on the dance floor when that look comes to your eye You’re the type of appetite I could never satisfy So you can keep on calling, though it won’t go anywhere I know that you’ll beckon me, but I can’t go there

Tiny Angel 02:33
You won’t tell me when we’re going, you won’t tell me when we’re there And you never stop to take a breath, Lord knows it’s only air You go down sweet Virginia into that darkness that I know That’s why we’re always together when they shoo us out the door Of some bar where we’ll find shelter from those stars there as they blink With the sidewalk rolling round and round as we walk up to the brink Of that trouble you know it’s coming ‘cause this town knows that’s in store And if I had an ounce of sense I suppose I’d walk right out the door But I watch her as she stumbles through the headlights and the glass And I see a tiny angel that used to pray with me at Mass Didn’t know then that she’d be running from the hard light of the sun That she’d never find the comfort of those mornings when we were young So go on down now sweet Virginia with your silly drunken stare I’ll be here come closing time, you know I’m always there To try and round up all those pieces maybe keep them in one place Hold you through those nightmares and the changes on your face But I’m always gone come morning when you’re lying on the mend ‘Cause you’ll be up come sundown to do it all again

Well I see you on the bleachers there you’re wonderin’ if you should Cause you spent your lifetime thinkin’, you were always up to good But now your days are older and you start to have some doubts Cause you’ve seen them walkin’ in, but there ain’t no one gettin’ out If you come to Hell’s kitchen you won’t need to make a fuss Cause there’s always work for hire, lots of tables here to bus Like that shady politician who’s made lifetimes of despair Now he sits there in the corner losing all his hair Or the woman at the side booth she ain’t got no mouth at all Cause she spent her days a lyin’ till her final curtain call If you come to Hell’s kitchen you won’t really need a name Cause the waitress won’t take credit but you’ll ask her just the same So stay there on your bleachers keep on wonderin’ if you should It’s alright to spend your lifetimes thinkin’ you were only good And so your days get longer and you start to have some doubts Cause you’ve seen them walkin’ in but there ain’t no one gettin’ out If you come to Hell’s kitchen you won’t need to make a fuss Cause there’s always work for hire lots of tables here to bus Like the man there on the floor, well he’s been cheatin’ all his life Now the only thing he sees is the women he called wife Or the boy that sits there between us smoking gun still in his hand Well he took his momma’s life, he said she’d never understand If you come to Hell’s kitchen you won’t really need a name Cause the waitress won’t take credit but you’ll ask her just the same.
10.
I know a man, his name is John He works hard and he works long Gets up early every day Tends the cattle and he hauls the hay Goes to church most every Sunday In the same pews where his Daddy prayed He gets down on his knees And Lord he prays, Lord he prays He prays for rain Cause it’s been dry, most every day Of this long summer, and Lord there’s been pain All through this valley and on our plains His wife is angry cause the bills aren’t paid So he walks down to his dried out river bed And Lord he prays, Lord he prays He prays for rain

about

Produced by Teddy Morgan and Kelly Pardekooper, House of Mud marks the creative/touring collaboration of these two artists. Released by Iowa City indie label Trailer Records and German label Trocadero Records, House of Mud was recorded by day while playing at night as the weekly house band at Margaritaville in Key West, Florida. Jimmy Buffet’s Shrimpboat Sound Studio hosted the recording sessions September 7–10, 2001. Musically diverse, the album travels through rock, pop, raw blues and naked folk. Teddy Morgan and Bo Ramsey cook on all things stringed while backbeat all-stars Atom Robinson and Matt Winegardner hold these Pardekooper originals together. "Can't Go There" was featured as theme music on the hit HBO show True Blood. "Drown in Alcohol" was featured on the hit CBS show Blue Bloods.
